FAQ

  • The word "doula" originates from the Greek word meaning "a woman who serves." Historically, communities would come together to support women throughout their pregnancies + birth, passing on generational knowledge + expertise garnered through time + experience. As our modern society has shifted away from that communal support + knowledge, doulas have filled the role of birth companion by providing physical comfort, emotional support, evidence-based education, + advocacy. Birth doulas offer continuous physical, emotional, + spiritual care throughout your pregnancy, labor, birth, + postpartum period.

  • Scientific research highlights several benefits of having a doula during childbirth. Studies show that doulas can lower the likelihood of cesarean sections by about 25%, shorten labor duration, + reduce the need for pain relief medications + instrumental interventions. Additionally, continuous support from a doula is associated with higher birth satisfaction + reduced anxiety, contributing to a more positive overall birth experience. These findings underscore the valuable role doulas play in enhancing both physical + emotional outcomes during labor.

However, if your employer partners with benefit programs like Carrot or Progyny, they might cover doula expenses, so it's worth inquiring! Additionally, I suggest setting up a "doula fund" or "cash fund" on your baby shower registry as a way to help cover these costs.
